Anna Pavlova as The Dying Swan, 1910
In 1931, just a few weeks shy of Pavlova’s 50th birthday, she was diagnosed with pneumonia & was told that if she didn’t receive an operation she would die, but that the operation would make it so that she could never dance again. “If I can’t dance I’d rather be dead,” she said & three weeks later she died of pleurisy while clutching her Dying Swan costume. Her last words were, “Play the last measure very softly.”
